LAB OF ASIAN DIASPORA
Lab of Asian Diaspora is a collective of artists of Asian descent. With this event series, we aim to strengthen the networking and visibility of the Asian diaspora.
In diesem etwa einstündigen Musikkonzert mit literarischer Begleitung wird eine Familiengeschichte über Grenzen hinweg erzählt – zwischen Krieg und Koexistenz, zwischen Trennung und Begegnung.
Die Schicksale von Menschen, die sich im Zweiten Weltkrieg als Feinde gegenüberstanden, werden im gemeinsamen künstlerischen Ausdruck miteinander verflochten – als Versuch eines Einklangs im kollektiven Gedächtnis.
Als besonderer Gast tritt die japanische Koto-Spielerin Naoko Kikuchi auf, begleitet von Texten von Tomoya Yokokawa.
Der Gastgeber Hang Su musiziert gemeinsam mit ihnen und erzählt seine Familienvergangenheit, die in der chinesisch-japanischen Geschichte oft übersehen oder verdrängt wurde.

For all Rice Hamburgers – whether you love eating, cooking, or you’re just curious.
Rice Express is a temporary, hands-on kitchen in a public space that uses rice as a symbol of diasporic identity. In front of the Schiller Library, visitors create their own rice burgers, share memories, recipes, and stories.
It brings together food, art, and everyday experiences to create an open and welcoming space for community and participation.

„Rice Express“ ist eine temporäre Mitmach-Küche im öffentlichen Raum, die Reis als Symbol diasporischer Identität nutzt. Vor der Schiller-Bibliothek gestalten Besucher*innen kreative Reis-Burger, tauschen Erinnerungen, Rezepte und Geschichten aus.
Es verbindet Kulinarik, Kunst und Alltagserfahrung zu einem offenen, solidarischen Ort für Begegnung und Teilhabe.
Teil der Artist Residencies Leopoldplatz 2025, finanziert vom Fachbereich Kunst & Kultur des Bezirksamts Mitte von Berlin.
“Asian Social Care” — Performance, Beats & Empowerment
Lab of Asian Diaspora ist ein Kollektiv von Künstler*innen mit asiatischen Wurzeln. Mit der Reihe “Asian Social Care” schaffen wir Räume, in denen Perspektiven der asiatisch gelesenen Diaspora sichtbar werden und solidarische Vernetzung möglich ist.
Am 2. Mai 2025 feiert das Format im Ost-Passage Theater Leipzig sein Debüt – mit zwei Programmpunkten:
→ 15:00 - 17:00 Empowerment-Workshop
Nachmittags laden wir gemeinsam mit korientation e.V. – einem Verein für die politische Vernetzung von Asiatisch-Deutschen – zu einem Empowerment-Workshop für asiatisch gelesene Menschen ein. Kostenfreie Anmeldung des Workshops:

Lab of Asian Diaspora is a collective of artists with Asian heritage. Through the series “Asian Social Care”, we aim to create spaces where perspectives of the Asian diasporic community become visible and where solidarity and connection can grow.

In the afternoon, we invite participants to join an empowerment workshop for Asian-diasporic people, co-organized with korientation e.V., a Berlin-based organization for the political networking of Asian-Germans.

Im Zentrum steht ein Erinnerungsklangalbum, das zwischen kollektiven Archiven und Einflüssen asiatischer Popkultur schwebt – präsentiert als ein poetisch verdichtetes Mini-Musiktheaterstück.
Lab of Asian Diaspora ist eine innovative Konzertreihe, die Musikerinnen und Performerinnen mit asiatischen Wurzeln eine Bühne bietet, um ihre Kunst, Geschichten und Perspektiven sichtbar zu machen. Ziel ist es, interkulturellen Austausch zu fördern und asiatische Künstlerinnen nicht nur als Ausführende, sondern als kreative Persönlichkeiten mit eigenen Narrativen ins Zentrum zu rücken.

“Writing Beyond the Yester-Morrow” explores new collaborative formats between urbanism and experimental music within the (pan-)Asian diaspora, examining its relationship with a new audience of transcultural communities.
Our Artist Lab was divided into different focal areas: In the first part, we invited practitioners from the (pan-)Asian diaspora in the performing arts to reflect on their experiences with cultural projects (dance, theater, performance, and new music) and their connections with diverse audiences over the past three years.
At the core of our collective evaluation were various strategies for engaging diverse audiences—whether activist, political, spontaneous, or otherwise—including ways to connect with people from different cultural backgrounds, such as the (pan-)Asian diaspora with its distinct cultural and political histories.
Additionally, we discussed crisis management and the structural development of a platform and network for professionals in the performing arts (music, performance, politics, and society) with (pan-)Asian backgrounds.
In the second part of the lab, participants shared insights into their own work through various workshops. This led to discussions about the future and how the reflections from the first phase could be translated into concrete artistic impulses.
The implementation phase of our lab revealed some unexpected perspectives. Many engaging discussions took place in the kitchen, over shared meals often prepared by Chinese lab leader Hang Su, embracing the motto “food is love, food is understanding,” which lies at the heart of Asian culture. The decision to continue this practice during the public presentation was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.
